If you or a loved one is seeking behavioral health treatment, you may have heard the terms "outpatient," "intensive outpatient," or "inpatient" — but what do they actually mean, and how do you know which one is appropriate?

The Levels of Care

Behavioral health treatment is organized into different levels based on how much support a person needs. Think of it as a spectrum — from the least intensive (standard outpatient) to the most intensive (inpatient hospitalization).

Outpatient (OP)

Standard outpatient treatment typically involves one to two sessions per week — usually individual therapy and/or case management. It is appropriate for people who are stable, have a supportive home environment, and need ongoing support to maintain their progress.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

How AHCCCS Covers IOP

Most AHCCCS managed care plans (including Mercy Care, Banner University, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, and Arizona Complete Health) cover IOP services when medically necessary. A prior authorization may be required. At Life Changing Wellness and Treatment Center, our team handles the authorization process on your behalf.
